Their species has been at risk of moving since ancient times as a result of excessive lion hunting among other factors. Only 15 lions were remaining in Gujarat in 1900 after the lion species had gone extinct in many other Indian states. The Nawab of Junagadh prohibited the hunting of lions and designated the Gir region as a protected sanctuary to preserve the declining lion population.
