Brief History of Adalaj StepWell (Adalaj ni Vav):

The Adalaj Stepwell, also known as Adalaj ni Vav, is a famous stepwell located in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is a remarkable example of Indian architecture and a significant historical monument.

Here’s a brief history of the Adalaj Stepwell:

  • Construction: The Adalaj Stepwell was constructed in the 15th century, during the reign of Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty. It was built as a well and as a resting place for travelers and pilgrims.
    • Rana Veer Singh decided to build a big stepwell but could not complete it, as he died in a battle with the Sultan of Gujarat, Mahmud Begada. Mahmud Begada desired to marry Queen Rudabai after falling in love with her.
    • However, the queen accepted his proposal as long as Mahmud finished building the stepwell. Queen Rudabai turned the vav into a holy well by having a few saints bathe in the water after it was finished.
    • She then fell into the vav and died.
  • Architectural Style: The stepwell is a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture. It incorporates elements of both Hindu and Islamic design.
  • Purpose: In addition to serving as a water source for the local community, the Adalaj Stepwell also served a social and cultural purpose. It was a place for people to gather, rest, and escape the scorching heat of the region.

This place is a heritage site which is at all not visible from the roadside 🙈The place is well maintained. But avoid going on public holidays and weekends as it is packed with people.Well maintained step well. The water is crystal blue and very beautiful. The place is very cool as compared to outside temperatures. You can easily spend 2-3 hours, admiring the beauty (if there is not much of a crowd)The tickets price is 25rs for adultsCheers!

Beautiful step well with amazing architecture. The concept of step well and why it was constructed is great. The maintenance is not upto the mark, there is always weird smell due to stagnant water . There is parking facilities, restroom facilities as well.
